Conflicts in Laikipia County are a seasonal occurrence. In periods of drought, pastoral conditions deteriorate dramatically. Pasture land becomes denuded, and water pans and wells dry up. Drought affects the
well-being of herders to the extent that the condition of their livestock becomes poor, with high levels of mortality. The consequence of this is lowered purchasing power, food insecurity, child malnutrition, social exclusion and conflicts.
