NEALCO members visited feedlots and abattoirs in South Africa and Botswana to benchmark and learn good practices

To enable NEALCO members learn good practises that could allow them reorganise the livestock industry in the region in order to embrace the export opportunities for livestock and livestock products, especially in Middle-East  ICPALD organized a benchmarking visit for them to feedlots and abattoirs in South Africa and Botswana from 25th to 29th April 2016. The visit drew a total of 20 people from Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, NEALCO, ICPALD and USAID.

The team visited the Beefcor feedlot that buys calves weighing 180-200 kg (liveweight) from individual farms and feeds them to a target weigh of 290 kg (carcass weight) and has a capacity of 31,000 animals.  The calves spend a maximum of 120 days in the feedlot before they are sold to abattoirs for slaughter.
