April 9, 2025 (LODWAR, Kenya) The IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development, with the financial support of Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) held a dissemination meeting for the assessment reports on latent and active conflicts in cross-border areas and mapped cross-border routes and resources for transhumance livestock and people.
Leadership from Kaabong District in Uganda and Narus in South Sudan engaged in the two-day workshop organized under the Sustainable Ecosystem Management (SEM) project.
Covering the SEM project areas of Kaabong (Uganda) & Kapoeta East (South Sudan) discussions focused on conflict sensitivity and hotspot mapping; cross-border transhumant livestock and people movements; cross-border shared resources, infrastructure & land cover changes.
The local cross-border leaders also re-capped on lessons learnt from the benchmarking visit to the cross-border area of Côte d’Ivoire & Mali, in the Tchologo region. This 2024 visit was a learning experience on reducing cross-border conflicts & enhancing well-informed cross-border resource sharing strategies such as reciprocity in trade of livestock & livestock products in cross-border transhumance regions; confederation of livestock keepers & traders in livestock products, to exploit opportunities in the regional livestock value chain.
This Lodwar meeting follows a similar one held on 20-21 March 2025, in Assosa, for the Benishangul-Gumuz Region stakeholders.
